September - Rise of USB and Exchangeable Media-borne Threats

Throughout September, the popularity of exchangeable media has contributed to the high occurrence of related threats in the Slovak Republic. INF/Autorun is the country‘s top threat with a share of 5.51%. A similar trend was registered also in Israel (4.99%), Latvia (4.97%) and Lithuania (5.44%). Even higher share of USB-exploiting threats was registered in the United Arab Emirates – 7.36%.

The analysts at ESET have carefully watched the commencement of activity of the worm Win32/Conficker.X. The worm has in its body an embedded command to trigger its activity on April 1st. Careful with USB devices - they can transmit the most advanced computer threats

We have been detecting very high volumes of malware using the Windows Autorun facility for well over a year, along with gaming password-stealing malware, which again takes second place. Password stealers are still being seen in very high numbers, and shouldn't be perceived as  in decline. INF/Autorun is actually a very broad class of malware, since many kinds of malicious program use this approach to infection.

Worm exploiting vulnerability in the Windows operating system among top threats
