PROBLEM:
At regular intervals or when updating manually, ESET NOD32 Antivirus or ESET Smart Security display the error message: "Virus signature database could not be updated". What should I do?
CAUSE:
This error occurs when you attempt to update and it is not possible to establish a connection to the server where the updates are located.
If you download updates from the Internet:
- Please check your Internet connection. As a test, open your Internet browser and try to connect to our web site: www.eset.eu.
- Please check your update server configuration. It is available in the section Update in the Advanced setup window (accessed by pressing the key F5). It is recommended to set Choose automatically from the Update server drop-down menu.
- If the server is set up according to step 2, click on the Setup... button next to “Advanced update setup”. Select your Update mode.
- When you have set your connection type, please check the proxy server setting in the HTTP proxy tab. By default, the Use global proxy server settings option is selected. If you don’t use a proxy server, please make sure that the Connection through a proxy server check box is left deselected. If you don’t know whether you use a proxy server when connecting to the Internet, select the Use global proxy server settings option and follow the instructions in the article Global proxy server settings .
- If you use a firewall, please make sure, that it is configured to enable EKRN connection to the update server and enables downloading of updates (e. g. when using the Zone Alarm firewall: in the Programs tab set „Allow Connect“ and „Allow Server“ for both Local and Internet). Set a firewall rule to allow communication for EKRN – it should then work correctly.
If you download updates from your local company server:
Please contact your system administrator.
Note: If you have administrator rights, please make sure that you have a correct update mirror setting. For more information see this article.
