QUESTION
How to configure Mirror in NOD32 Professional Edition?
ANSWER
Mirror is available in two versions:
Mirror as a shared network folder
The principle of this method lies in the fact that updates are saved to a network shared folder and then distributed across LAN. The computer which downloads updates from the Internet does not inevitably have to be also a server storing NOD32 updates for client computers. The network folder can be located also elsewhere than locally (for example at a Novell Netware server, or a Linux server).
Note: This method may be limited by the number of computers that can connect to a shared folder at a time. If this is the case, it is recommended to use the other option – Mirror as an HTTP server.
Installation:
- In NOD32 Control Center navigate to Update > Mirror and then click Setup in the window that appears on the right hand side. Tick Create update mirror. In the upper section select all versions of NOD32 for which updates will be downloaded from the Internet.
Note: All versions of NOD32 present in your local network should be selected.
- Click the Folder button and list the folder dedicated for update copies. If the folder is located on other computer, enter the path to the shared network directory. When entering a path to a network directory, please use the UNC format. For example, if a folder named MIRROR is located on a server named SERVER, the path will be \\SERVER\MIRROR.
- The next step is to insert user name and password to access the folder with update copies to Login name and Password. If mirror as a shared folder is located on a computer with an older operating system - Windows 95/98/ME – then it doesn’t mater what login name and password you provide. It is recommended to leave the text boxes empty to avoid future complications. On the other hand, on Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 Login name and Password must be supplied, namely from the corresponding domain (or group) name, which is a member of the same domain/group as the computer storing the update copies. Use the following format DOMAIN\USER_NAME, or WORKGROUP\USER_NAME.
- In NOD32 on client workstations change the URL of the update server. To do so, navigate to NOD32 Control Center > Update > and click Setup. Then select the Servers... button and add a new update server, i.e. location of the network folder. As mentioned above, it should be \\SERVER\MIRROR. Save the changes and return back to the Update Setup window to select \\SERVER\MIRROR from the Server drop-down list.
In case the folder is created on a computer with operating systems Windows NT/2000/XP/2003, on each client computer updating from the folder it is necessary to supply a user name and password granting access to the shared network folder with updates for NOD32. Fill in the text boxes User name and Password in the Update Setup tab. Such username – account must have the “read“right for the folder. It is advised to create a special account dedicated for local updates of the antivirus system NOD32. If you create NODUSER as a member of a domain named COMPANY, then the format of your username will be as follows: COMPANY\NODUSER.
- Save the changes by clicking OK at the bottom. To test the configuration, select Update Now in the section Update.
NOD32 should not report any error messages or ask you to enter your user name and password again.
Note: Please make sure that silent mode is not activated. Silent mode suppresses all messages that require no real user intervention. These also include update error messages. To read more about general system configuration of NOD32 please click NOD32 Control Center settings.
Mirror as an HTTP server
A computer with Mirror as an HTTP server serves to download update files from the Internet and as a NOD32 update server for clients in LAN. The advantage of this method is the fact that client workstations need no authentication data for the update server.
Note: The method is limited by the number of users downloading updates. The recommended maximum number of users is 100. If you want more users, you can create more update servers or use other HTTP server (e.g. Apache).
Installation:
- In NOD32 Control Center navigate to Update > Mirror and then click Setup in the window that appears on the right hand side. Tick Create update mirror and Enable access to files via the HTTP protocol. In the upper section select all versions of NOD32 for which updates will be downloaded from the Internet.
Note: All versions of NOD32 present in your local network should be selected.
- Click the Folder button and list the folder dedicated for update copies, which will be available via the HTTP protocol. The path must lead to the local computer, not to a network folder! Click OK to confirm the changes.
- In order to download update files to the folder immediately, before the pre-scheduled time, select Update Now in the section Update. That is all for the server side, let’s proceed to client workstations.
- In NOD32 on client workstations change the URL of the update server to http://server_IP_address:8081, or http://server_name:8081. To do so, navigate to NOD32 Control Center > Update > and click Setup. Then select the Servers... button and add a new update server: http://server_IP_address:8081, or http://server_name:8081. Save the changes and return back to the Update Setup to select the sew server from the drop-down menu.
- Now both server and clients are ready. To test the communication. Select Update Now on a client computer.
Note: Please make sure that silent mode is not activated. Silent mode suppresses all messages that require no real user intervention. These also include update error messages. To read more about general system configuration of NOD32 please click NOD32 Control Center settings.
